Reading

Focus: Prediction

What is prediction in reading?

Prediction is making a statement about what will happen in the future. It is based on:

  • what you have read
  • what is inferred
  • prior knowledge.

How do I predict in reading?

  • Read - Gather evidence from text/images
  • Think - Use those details, clues and own experiences to make a prediction about what will happen next! (keyword: because)
  • Revise - Change your predictions as you gather new evidence.

Activities:

Pick a book off your shelf that you haven't read yet and read the first chapter with a family member. If you have read all your books, try this classic story, Rikki Tikki Tavi, by Rudyard Kipling.

Use the stems below to make predictions.

  • I predict that...
  • I think he/she/this character will.... because...
  • When I read ..... it made me think ...... would happen next
  • I wonder if...

Discuss the book together, using some of the questions below.

Have a think about how you have been feeling about studying from home instead of school for the past week. For each day this week, write a diary entry making sure you capture your observations, feelings and ideas about what is happening in the world lately. This is a time which will go down in history!

Questions to consider:

  • What have you been doing at home?
  • What do you miss most about school? Why?
  • What are you enjoying most about being at home?
  • How are you currently feeling about the world?
