Reading

Read a book, any book! Discuss the book by asking questions and talking about themes. Write down any unfamiliar words and look them up in a dictionary. Here are some examples of questions to support comprehension:

Extra challenge: Read a book to a family member and come up with your own questions to ask them! Make sure they really understood the story. Use question words (who, when, what, where, how and why).

Writing

Weekly focus: Retell a story

Choose a favourite book or film and write the story in your own words. Try acting it out with your family and sequencing the events first. How can you make your version interesting, funny or exciting? Ideas for stories:

The Boy who Cried Wolf

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Extra challenge: Read your story to the family and ask them to tell you their favourite part.

Maths

Weekly focus: Find the missing number

Warm up: Play Daily 10 or Number Bonds to 20 to practise your mental maths.

Log on to Espresso using the student login details and visit this page to practise completing number sentences. Make the maths story with real objects like toys, apples or counters to help you work it out.

You can also visit this page to solve some word problems.

Student login details for Espresso have been sent to your parents.

If you do not have prolonged internet access, try this home activity:

Find 20 toys or books and lay them out. How many do you have to take away to make 12? How about 16? Write the number sentences to match your story e.g.

20 – 8 = 12

20 – 4 = 16

Extra challenge: Make up your own missing number problems and ask a family member to solve them. How can you check their answers?
