Reading

Focus: Clarification

What is clarifying in reading?

Sometimes when reading, you might have trouble understanding particular words or sentences. Clarifying means to make what you do not understand clear.

How do I clarify in reading?

  • Try to put it in context by using other words as clues. This could mean reading on or rereading a previous sentence/part of the text.
  • Try to put it in context by using other clues in the text e.g pictures or keyword. Non-fiction texts often have words in bold which are defined in a glossary at the back of the book.
  • Use grammatical knowledge e.g. I know the prefix bi means 2 so the word bilingual must have something to do with...
  • Get a dictionary and find out what a word means.
  • Reread!

Activities:

Read a book! A new one, a borrowed one, an old favourite, just read!

  • Clarify any words/part you are unsure of as you read.
  • Discuss the book together, using some of the questions below.

Writing

Focus: Writing a descriptive story

Look at this picture.  The artist has titled it 'Drifting Away'. Talk about this picture with someone in your family. Look at the questions underneath and answer some of them together.

Questions:

  • What can you see inside the bottle?
  • What is that place?
  • Is it a miniature village inside an ordinary-sized bottle, or an ordinary-sized village inside a giant bottle?
  • Has it always been inside the bottle?
  • Does anyone live there? Can they feel the waves of the water outside the bottle?
  • How did the bottle get here?
  • Where is it drifting away from/to?

Activities:

  • Use the picture to create a word bank -  a list of five nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs.
  • Make up a story about the picture and share it with your family.
  • Create a plan of your story.
  • Use your plan and word bank to create a story this week. You may want to draft it first.
  • When complete, self assess your work. Edit any errors and up-level your work.
  • Read your new masterpiece to your family!

Maths

Focus: Column addition

Click here to watch a video on column addition. Try the game underneath the video to test your knowledge, then have a go at one activity a day below.

Activity:

  • Flying machines are created  in an annual competition called the Red Bull Flugtag. Below is a price list of materials that teams might need to make a flying machine. Look at the order list and use column method to find out how much each flying machine will cost per team.
  • How many flying machine combinations can you create that will cost under £10,000?
  • I want to make a flying machine using 10,000 balloons. I have a £5000 budget. Can I do this? Use written calculations to explain your answer.
  • I want to make a flying machine using 6 wheels. Estimate how much it will cost. Alice says it will cost a total of £7806. Do you agree? Explain your answer.
  • Imagine you are a designer. Ask your family to give you a budget and create 5 combinations. Design a poster of your flying machines and ask them which one they would purchase! Get creative and make a sales pitch!
