Writing weekly focus – Poetry

This week we are going to imagine that we are taking a walk through the forest where Jub lives.

What can you hear?

What can you see?

What can you smell?

If you touch something, how does it feel?

How does each thing you see, hear, smell or touch make you feel?

Watch and listen to the clips below for some inspiration. Have some paper and a pencil ready to make some notes.

You should use a grid like the one below to help you sort your ideas.

See Smell
Shimmering gold against the violet sky Rich, dry earth
Hear Feel
Bats fluttering and gliding fear

Now take one thing that you have seen, heard, smelled or touched and write a phrase. For example:

1) The branches reached up towards the moonlight.

This sentence could be made better by describing the branches.

2) The hard, brown branches reached up towards the moonlight.

Could you make the sentence even better?

Now write 4 of your own phrases. Each time think about ways to improve the phrase by adding more exciting adjectives, similes, alliteration or personification.

After each phrase, write a line below which is a word that expresses how the phrase makes you feel.

The hard, brown branches reached up towards the moonlight.

Bats fluttering and gliding swiftly overhead.

Cool, gentle breeze whispering softly through the leaves.

Squirrels scampering up the trees.

Once you have finished  your poem try to edit and improve it. You could write it up neatly and add some illustrations.

Don’t forget to upload your work to the Anson blog - We love to see how hard you are working!
