What Is PLASTIC POLLUTION?

Dr Binocs explains all about plastic pollution...

Becoming a Plastic Clever School means we need to reduce our use of single-use plastic, including the BIG 4 plastic polluters (cups + lids, straws, bottles and bags), plus cutlery and crockery.

ACTIVITY 1 - SINGLE USE PLASTICS

A single use plastic item is one that we use once and then throw away. This includes:

plastic bottles

plastic bags

coffee cup lids

plastic straws

plastic cutlery

Which types of single-use plastic do you use at home? Have a look around your home and make a chart to see which plastic item you use that are only used once.

Remember having lots of plastic in your home isn't necessarily a bad thing. Plastic is designed to last for a long time and so lots of plastic can be really useful.

We are going to look at 4 types of plastic we could stop using.

ACTIVITY 2 - THE PLASTIC CLEVER MINDSET

There are some plastics that are good and anyway the reality is that we cannot stop every piece of plastic being produced. However, we can change the way we think. We can be cleverer with our use of plastic.

The BIG 4 plastic polluters are our main issue at the moment: the coffee cups + lidsplastic bottlesstraws and plastic bags.

We want everyone to design a poster to help people to stop using these BIG 4 Plastic Polluters.

YOUR POSTER SHOULD

use the slogan "BE PLASTIC CLEVER"

show the BIG 4 items

have at least 2 facts you know about plastic

Here are some facts you might want to use in your poster. You can download the posters below.

ACTIVITY 3 - REUSE A MILK BOTTLE

It's a plastic bottle that most of us have in our homes. You may already recycle these after you use them.

This week your challenge is to give it a really good wash and reuse it for something else!

Take a picture of your milk bottle being reused and upload it to the blog.

Here are a few ideas...
