Can you plant a seed and watch how it changes over time?

Choose something that will sprout quickly. Sunflowers  are a great choice. The seeds are large, germinate quickly, and grow into very impressive flowers.

Look at the picture on the front of the seed package. Look at the seeds. Marvel at the way the seed transforms into a huge plant.

Provide spoons, pots and soil and follow the directions on the seed packet to plant the seeds.

Keep the plant watered and place it in a sunny window once it pushes through the soil.

When it is a small seedling it can go into the garden.

Here you can record the growth of your sunflower over time.

This week we will be continuing to introduce the children to early phonics - letter sounds.

In Nursery we use the Jolly Phonics rhymes and actions to help the children to remember each sound. We will introduce two sounds each week.

This week the sounds are ''E” and ''U”

. Continue practising this phonics song

Phonics Song 2 (new version)

Watch these Jolly phonics videos regularly and practise the songs and actions.

Phonics Games

  • Try putting together a seed tray  to explore.  Each child will use the tray in different ways and gives the children  lots of opportunities to practice their fine motor skills.
  • sort the seeds into different types or colours.
  • Count how many seeds it takes to fill one spot on the flower tray (and compare the numbers when different kinds of seeds are used).
  • Practicing nonstandard measuring by counting how many scoops of seeds it takes to fill one of the small pots.
  • Making seed patterns with the seeds.
